Tinyteen Girls Models

Nicole Clark, a former fashion model who advises girls on the pitfalls of modeling, said the appearance by the 18-year-old pop star is "clear evidence" the lingerie maker is targeting teen and preteen girls.Advertisement

Clarke said the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show "has never been anything more than an opportunity for voyeurs to ogle models in revealing lingerie," but she said the show used to at least pretend it was intended for mature audiences.

"That facade was shattered last year when Katy Perry performed 'Teenage Dream' while models strutted down the runway in skimpy outfits with patterns that came straight out of a 1st grade classroom, featuring rainbow stockings, polka-dot panties, a smiley-face sunshine robe, and even lipstick-spotted pj's with a long slit down the front and a hole over the rear to expose the sequined 'Kiss This' panties," she said.Advertisement

You're asking the million dollar question for moms of tween girls, which I will rephrase as: How do I help my emerging teen develop healthy habits that will keep her new womanly body fit, without harming her self esteem, contributing to the formation of an eating disorder, or burdening her with my own longtime body/weight/food issues?

5. Rethink your own views. If your daughter's weight for height puts her in the 90th percentile, she probably thinks of herself as fat, and you may also. Start by consciously ditching the idea that your daughter should fit the overly thin model that dominates our culture. Then have a conversation with her pediatrician, without your daughter around, about whether she is overweight. Most pediatricians warn parents at their daughter's annual checkup at around age ten that girls usually put weight on as they approach puberty, and this is not unhealthy. Be sure to ask her pediatrician about her BMI (body-mass index).

8. Educate yourself and your daughter about how dangerous eating disorders are, and how our culture promotes them. We are barraged with images of overly thin women until we think those images are normal. They aren't. Fashion models are about 25% thinner than the majority of American women. There's a wide range of what is a "normal" woman's body, but since estrogen causes body fat to be stored in the hips, thighs, belly and buttocks, women tend to be voluptuous (the average woman in the U.S. is 5'4" and 143 lbs.) Normal is more like a Botticelli Venus than a model. Most teen girls think they are overweight, even though they aren't. Make sure she knows that weight gain is a normal part of developing as a woman, and fitness is the goal, not some warped cultural ideal of over-thinness.

11. Recognize that Bruce Springsteen was right: "Everybody has a hungry heart." Does your daughter have a hunger that food won't fill? Most 12 year old girls are self conscious, anxious about their changing bodies and peer dynamics, and scared about losing their connection to their parents while they step into the new independence they need so they can grow up. Many tween girls are also starved for physical contact because mom and dad are nervous about snuggling their daughter now that she's looking more like a sexy young woman than a little girl.

As the adolescent girl struggles with her self-image, she resorts to dangerous methods to achieve an impossible look. Many girls will starve themselves in an attempt to look like the computer-enhanced pictures of models in the media.

These avenues of information cause distorted thoughts of how they should look and act in order to feel accepted. Popular egotistical artists such as Kanye West, Rihanna and Nikki Manaj fabricate public personas that young girls see as strong and confident. Female artists and fashion icons, prance around in tiny skin tight clothes attempting to flaunt everything that they have.

This idolization of celebrities grows steadily. In 2010, middle schoolers walked the halls in bedazzled American Eagle t-shirts and bell bottom jeans. Now crop tops and cut off jean shorts adorn the bodies of adolescent girls.

(AP) -- In the first settlement of its kind, national jewelry seller Tween Brands Inc. will effectively eliminate the toxic metal cadmium from the bracelets, necklaces and other items it sells. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1450190541376-1'); ); The agreement covers jewelry sold in California, but given the size of the state's market, it becomes company policy nationally. It covers jewelry intended for children, teens and adults, expanding the age range from the preteen girls who had been the focus of concern after high levels of cadmium in jewelry surfaced over the past year. 041b061a72
